Going off the grid

I'd like to create a cell of car batteries in my backyard shed that can supply enough energy for the house so that I don't have to rely on my power company for electricity.  I was thinking of creating a solar panel array to recharge this cell.  Other than having to deal with cloudy days, I can't think of any great downside.  Does anyone have experience with this kind of solution?

Re: Going off the grid

I found a good article in "Off the Grid News" entitled "Building a Battery Bank for your Off-Grid Energy Needs". http://www.offthegridnews.com/grid-threats/building-a-battery-bank-for-your-off-grid-energy-needs/
