Wood burning Stoves for cooking and heating?

Has anyone advice or experience using a wood burning stove to also cook on?
We can only buy it once and want to get the right one to replace the current
inefficient open hearth.
We need it to be 5 kw or less for our small house, but advice seems to vary
as to how practical it is to cook on/ in a wood burning stove.
Also, the only free source of wood near us is driftwood... is that a non starter?
