Best HA protocol is ....?

I'm new to HA. In fact I haven't purchased anything yet. Guess I'm suffering from analysis paralysis. How should I decide on a protocol? Should I choose my devices first, which will indicate the protocols that I have to support? Is there a clear protocol winner. I wish that there were a simple, objective matrix with the protocols and features.

Good strategy. I've been doing well with Wi Fi myself.
